The Agent Buyer Test: Why Cognition Hit $492M ARR in 12 Months, Salesforce Agentforce Crossed $1.2B, and Amazon Just Handed Kate Spade an AI Storefront

May 31, 2026

There is a new buyer in the market.

It does not sleep. It does not pause for time zones. It does not get tired of comparison shopping. And it spends real money on behalf of real customers.

That buyer is an AI agent. And this week three of the biggest names in software just confirmed it is already paying.

If your business cannot pass what I am calling the Agent Buyer Test, you are about to lose revenue you cannot see leaking.

What happened with Cognition's $492M ARR jump?

Cognition, the maker of the Devin AI software engineer, just raised more than $1 billion at a $26 billion post-money valuation in a round co-led by Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and 8VC (TechCrunch, The Next Web).

The number that matters is not the valuation. It is the revenue trajectory.

Cognition's annualized run rate grew from $37 million in May 2025 to $492 million in May 2026. That is a 13x jump in 12 months (The Next Web).

Enterprise adoption of Devin has held 50% month-over-month growth for the last six months (TechCrunch).

The customer list reads like a Fortune 100 page. Goldman Sachs. Mercedes-Benz. NASA. Santander. Citigroup. Dell. Cisco. The US Army. The US Navy (KuCoin).

Cognition is on pace to cross $1 billion in annualized revenue later this year, just three years after going from a viral demo to a real company (The Next Web).

This is what the agent buyer looks like when it is buying software. Goldman Sachs is not just renting a coding tool. They are renting an autonomous engineer.

Why did Salesforce Agentforce just cross $1.2B in ARR?

Salesforce reported its fiscal Q1 2027 results this week and the AI line items reshaped the entire story.

Agentforce, Salesforce's AI agent suite, crossed $1 billion in annual recurring revenue for the first time and reached $1.2 billion, up 205% year over year (SaaStr).

The combined Agentforce plus Data 360 ARR now sits at $3.4 billion, up more than 200% (SaaStr).

But the most important number in the Salesforce report is not in dollars.

It is "Agentic Work Units." Salesforce reported delivering 3.8 billion of them in the quarter, alongside 52 trillion records ingested (LinkedIn).

Read that line again. 3.8 billion units of work were done by agents on behalf of customers this quarter inside one platform.

This is the new unit of business activity. Hours are out. Tasks are out. Agentic work units are in.

If your offer cannot be priced and packaged in those units, you are selling against a clock that no longer exists.

What does Amazon's AWS Agentic Shopping Assistant actually mean for retailers?

Then came the Amazon piece that should make every ecommerce founder sit up.

Amazon Web Services launched the Agentic Shopping Assistant this week. It is the technology that powered Rufus and the rebranded Alexa for Shopping, now offered to any retailer as a service (GeekWire, Tech.co).

In the launch announcement, Amazon highlighted Kate Spade as a flagship example, building an agentic shopping experience using AWS plus Anthropic models (Sophic Capital).

The tool delivers "personalized product recommendations displayed as rich visual product cards, complete with images, pricing, and quick-reply options" (Tech.co).

Translation. The same AI that has been telling Amazon customers what to buy for two years is now showing up on independent retailer sites, with the retailer's brand on the front and Amazon's intelligence on the back.

Snowflake, the data platform, told the same story from a different angle. Customer accounts using Snowflake's AI products jumped from 9,100 to 13,600 in a single quarter, and the company committed $6 billion to AWS over the next several years for AI infrastructure (Sophic Capital).

Every layer of the stack is racing to be the one your customer's agent talks to first.

What is the Agent Buyer Test?

Here is the framework. Memorize it.

The Agent Buyer Test asks five questions about your business. If you cannot answer yes to at least four of them today, you are about to leak revenue to a competitor that can.

Question 1. Can an agent find you? Is your business, product catalog, pricing, and policies indexed in a way an AI agent can read in seconds? Structured data, clear FAQ pages, machine-readable specs. If a customer asks Claude or ChatGPT "find me a service like X under $Y," does your name show up with the right details?

Question 2. Can an agent evaluate you? Do you have transparent comparable units of value (price per item, price per outcome, price per hour, guarantees, refund terms) so an agent can stack-rank you against three other options in 30 seconds?

Question 3. Can an agent transact with you? Do you offer a checkout, booking, intake, or API path that an agent can complete on behalf of a customer without a human-only step (think captchas, phone-only intake, gated demos)?

Question 4. Can an agent fulfill from you? After purchase, can the agent confirm delivery, track status, and verify completion without your team having to manually intervene? Your fulfillment must speak machine.

Question 5. Can an agent trust you? Do you have public, verifiable signals of trust (reviews, case studies, security posture, refund history) that an agent can weight when recommending you next time?

That is the Agent Buyer Test.

Cognition passes all five at the enterprise software layer. That is why they hit $492 million ARR in 12 months. Salesforce is forcing every customer to pass it, which is why Agentforce is generating 3.8 billion work units a quarter. Amazon is selling the entire test as a service to retailers who do not have time to build it themselves.

What does the Agent Buyer Test mean for a small business owner this week?

This is not hypothetical. The agent economy is forming in real time, and the buyers are paying real bills.

Cognition has gone from $37M to $492M ARR in 12 months (The Next Web). Salesforce Agentforce closed Q1 at $1.2B ARR (SaaStr). AWS just turned its shopping assistant into a product any retailer can rent (GeekWire). Snowflake added 4,500 net new AI customers in 90 days (Sophic Capital).

Your competitors do not need to beat you on product. They need to beat you on agent-readiness.

Here is your 60-minute starter exercise.

Open a doc. Score yourself 1 through 5 on each Agent Buyer Test question. Be brutal. Below a 3 on any question is a red flag.

Fix the lowest score first. If discovery is your weak point, rewrite your top 5 product or service pages with structured FAQ and clear unit pricing. If transaction is your weak point, add an embedded checkout or booking link an agent could parse.

Then schedule a check 30 days from now to retest.

  • Snowflake's AI customer count jumped from 9,100 to 13,600 in one quarter, alongside a $6B AWS commitment (Sophic Capital).
  • The Agent Buyer Test scores businesses on five dimensions: can an agent find, evaluate, transact with, fulfill from, and trust you.

FAQ

What is an AI agent buyer and why should a business owner care? An AI agent buyer is software that finds, evaluates, transacts, and follows up on behalf of a human customer. Cognition's Devin, Salesforce's Agentforce, and Amazon's Agentic Shopping Assistant are early examples already generating billions in annual recurring revenue across enterprises (SaaStr, GeekWire). If your business cannot serve them, you are invisible to a new and growing buyer category.

Is the AWS Agentic Shopping Assistant available to small ecommerce stores? Yes. AWS is marketing the Agentic Shopping Assistant to any retailer on AWS, not just enterprise customers. Kate Spade is the flagship case study, with personalized product cards showing images, pricing, and quick-reply options (Tech.co). Smaller stores can plug in via AWS Marketplace.

Why is Cognition worth $26 billion if it only has $492 million in revenue? Investors are pricing trajectory, not revenue. Cognition's ARR grew 13x in 12 months, with enterprise usage growing 50% month over month for six months straight, and customers spanning Goldman Sachs, Mercedes-Benz, Citigroup, NASA, and the US military (KuCoin). The multiple is roughly 53x revenue, reflecting a bet that software engineering is the first large-scale enterprise procurement category for AI agents.

What is an Agentic Work Unit and how do I price one? A unit of work performed by an AI agent on behalf of a customer. Salesforce delivered 3.8 billion of them in one quarter (LinkedIn). For your business, pricing one means defining a single completed customer outcome (an answered ticket, a booked call, a closed sale) and attaching a cost to producing it with an agent.

What is the first step to passing the Agent Buyer Test? Audit your top 5 product or service pages this week and confirm three things: machine-readable pricing, a structured FAQ, and an agent-completable transaction path. Then book a 1-on-1 AI Implementation Session at go.8fig.ai/1-on-1 if you want help mapping the full stack.
